Birmingham
Residence

This renovation and addition to a 1929 suburban home compliments the existing, while simultaneously departing from the past in its design approach and spatial character.

A glass corridor bridges the two halves, visually dissolving into the surrounding garden. The clients required open spaces to display their extensive collection of outsider art. A subtle shift of angle with a large corner window directs the view from the living room across the property. This positioning along with full height windows maximizes light during long Midwestern winters, while also framing views of the older house and surrounding trees.

The addition's zinc-clad exterior juxtaposes the traditional neighborhood context by bringing in a modern element.
